This pencil drawing was done by a member of our family in 1992 and is now a framed picture in our present home. The sketch was drawn from a bedroom in Brantwood, a house in Coniston in the English Lake District. It shows the view looking SW past the nearby pub and across Coniston Water. Brantwood was for some time the home of the 19th Century English writer, artist and socialist John Ruskin.
The house is set in a 250 acre woodland estate. For more information on the history of the house see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brantwood Many of the rooms are very much as they were in Ruskin’s day. Seven rooms are open to the public; you can also stay in the house which is now run by the Brantwood Trust.

The house in the background is Brantwood and the right angled corner window from which the drawing was done can be seen just above the heavily bearded Mr Ruskin’s head. So we have a drawer pretty much looking down on where, a hundred years before, the group posed, and a group being photographed, all unaware that a hundred years later a shadowy figure would be working away in the window behind them…

Reflections 
I don’t know if you’ve heard of Grandma Moses, but this drawing reminds me of her work. She was a very famous North American naif painter and cultural icon. Here’s her information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grandma_Moses

She began painting at the age of 76, much later than naif painter Henri Rousseau, but she was like the female version of him. She had the same style that he did, but emphasized more on landscape rural scenes, such as these. Rousseau on the other hand, liked jungle scenes. Moses painted until she was 100 years old. Great drawing done in this style.
I hope I didn’t offend anyone by comparing this drawing to a naif artist; I highly respect the style and hope I didn’t offend anyone.

Actually I had never seen anything of hers before, so thank you for pointing it out. I can indeed see some similarities, especially in the trees and buildings. Some of her work reminds me a bit of Bruegel’s. ( A Bruegel reproduction will probably feature in a later post.)
Yes, Bruegel would be even more comparable to Moses. And there were like two or three Bruegel brothers who painted in a similar fashion.
